AKKOGORILLA (あっこゴリラ) is a Japanese Hip-Hop artist.

She is a founding member of the Hip-Hop crew Zoomgals.

Profile[]

  • Her music is supposed to shake up the "normality" of life and make you question "What is normal?".[1]
  • Themes in her work include questioning stereotypes of what gender should be, such as "girlishness", and songs about body hair, age and other themes.
  • She identified herself as a "feminist" in a tweet on March 2, 2019.
  • She participated in the "#NoBagForMe" project, which aims to diversify the options for purchasing sanitary products. At that time, she stated "Feminism is not a thought but a way of thinking".
  • In 2011, she made her major label debut as the drummer of HAPPY BIRTHDAY under the stage name "Akko". She was fascinated by gorillas, which use rhythm to carry out conversations and began calling herself "AKKOGORILLA" in a flippant way as a character who raps during the band's activities. After the band broke up in April 2015, she began working as a solo rapper. At the same time, she also worked as a TV reporter and radio assistant.
  • On January 29, 2017, she became the winner of the first female-only MC battle "CINDERELLA MCBATTLE".
  • As the main navigator of J-WAVE's "SONAR MUSIC" since 2019, she has been involved in various activities of expression that transcend the barriers of nationality and industry, such as a street live performance involving villagers in Malawi, Africa, and a lecture on "Gender Theory in Contemporary Cultural Activities" at Rikkyo University.
  • At the end of 2019, she launched "GOOD VIBRATIONS", an empowerment party involving various artists, creators and critics, which will be held on a regular basis with the theme of "Overcoming the barriers of division with the power of art, we will create the future of Japan".
  • On April 1, 2020, she announced her marriage to the rapper BSC and decision to leave her label to become independent on Twitter.[1][2][3]
