All Nighters (オールナイターズ) was a J-Pop idol group. The group consisted of a rotational, all-female group of co-hosts/MCs of the Fuji Television program, All Night Fuji. In the First and Second Generations, all members had to be enrolled in a junior college, university, or a similar extended education program during their time in the group. By the group's disbandment in 1991, there had been over 250 members across four generations.[1]
This group is notable for being the first large scale rotational idol unit in J-pop, as well as the first to include sub-units. Onyanko Club was also created using a slightly modified format of the All Nighters. Several early audition candidates for Onyanko Club were sourced from All Nighters.
History[]
The group was founded in 1983 with the launch of All Night Fuji (オールナイトフジ), a late-night variety TV show that aired every weekend from midnight to approximately 3:30 AM. It became very popular among high school and college aged students, but brought in very little money. Therefore, producers planned to have some of the female cast members participate in musical activities to raise funds. Starting in February 1984, select members began to engage in idol activities starting with the sub-unit Okawari Sisters. The sub-unit became surprisingly successful, reaching the Oricon Weekly Top #20, and as a result more sub-units were created and full albums were released under the group's name. However, on March 31st, 1985, one of the requirements of a government mandated full restructure[2] of All Night Fuji was for all members to be terminated, disbanding the group and its sub-units.
Following the restructure, the group relaunched later in 1985 as the Second Generation with entirely new members and fewer musical activities, and the original members then became known as the First Generation.
By the Third Generation in 1986, membership criteria loosened, and by the Fourth Generation in 1988, the group stopped making music entirely. The cast continued their co-hosting duties until All Night Fuji was ultimately cancelled in 1991.
Although All Night Fuji has been revived several times over the years, an idol group was not included until the 2023 revival of the show, All Night Fujiko, which introduced an official successor group, Fujikos.[3] All Night Fujiko was cancelled in spring 2025.

Trivia[]
- Their official catchphrase was "Watashitachi baka janai!" (私たちはバカじゃない/We aren't stupid!)
- Several idols and singers worked alongside the All Nighters as hosts on All Night Fuji, such as Tunnels, Akimoto Naomi, Matsumoto Iyo, Morio Yumi, Sagara Haruko, Ito Chieri and many more.
- In June 1985, it was revealed that a Second Generation member of the group, Shinozaki Chie (篠崎千恵), was actually a sex worker employed at a Kabukicho massage parlor, and not a current college student. She was quickly recognized by her patrons, and an investigation was launched by the network. When her true background was revealed she was quickly dismissed.
- For about the first year and a half on air, All Night Fuji was mostly unscripted, and because of this, it was frequently in violation of broadcast standards. Offenses included showing of explicit pornographic material, cursing, nudity, consumption of alcohol, and frequent intoxication of its hosts and guest stars. The violations became so severe that the Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now known as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) was forced to intervene in 1985, forcing them to rewrite broadcast standards for late night television with much more strict punishments on the networks.[4] As a result of the new standards, All Night Fuji had to be almost completely restructured. All hosts, staff, and crew were either terminated or moved to other programs such as Yuyake Nyan Nyan. Only a select number of directorial staff were allowed to stay on the program.
- They had a parody group from a rival television channel, TV Asahi, called Onatters.
- All Night Fuji had a "Mini-Concert" segment mainly used to promote affiliated artist's new releases. The concerts were performed with a live band and lasted around 20 minutes. Some of the most famous performers were Nakahara Meiko and Akimoto Naomi, but sometimes even Western artists were invited to perform, like Laura Branigan and Madonna.
