All Nighters (オールナイターズ) was a J-Pop idol group. The group consisted of a rotational, all-female group of co-hosts/MCs of the Fuji Television program, All Night Fuji. In the First and Second Generations, all members had to be enrolled in a junior college, university, or a similar extended education program during their time in the group. By the group's disbandment in 1991, there had been over 250 members across four generations.[1]
This group is notable for being the first large scale rotational idol unit in J-pop, as well as the first to include sub-units. Onyanko Club was also created using a slightly modified format of the All Nighters. Several early audition candidates for Onyanko Club were sourced from All Nighters.
History[]
The group was founded in 1983 with the launch of All Night Fuji, a late-night TV show popular among high school and college aged students. Due to its low budget, producers had some of the female ensemble cast participate in musical activities to raise funds. Starting in February 1984, select members began to engage in idol activities starting with the sub-unit Okawari Sisters. The group became surprisingly successful and attracted many more fans. However, on March 31st, 1985, a government mandated network restructure forced all members to leave, disbanding the group and its sub-units. The original members then became known as the "First Generation."
The group relaunched later in 1985 as the Second Generation with entirely new members and fewer musical activities. By the Third Generation in 1986, membership criteria loosened, and by the Fourth Generation in 1988, the group stopped making music but continued co-hosting duties until All Night Fuji was cancelled in 1991.
In 2023, Fuji Television revived the show as All Night Fujiko and introduced a successor group, Fujikos, with three generations as of 2024.[2]
