Asaka Yui (浅香唯) is a Japanese singer, actress, talento, and former idol.
Profile[]
- Special Skills: Mahjong (Professional)
History[]
Her career began with her win in The Scout Audition '84 hosted by Shoujo Comics. Although uninterested in an entertainment career, she entered for the prize (a stereo and trip to Guam) and received the Asaka Yui Award, named after a character in the shoujo manga series Shooting Star. This character’s name eventually became her stage name.
Despite her lack of interest, agencies scouted her after the contest, and she debuted with Hummingbird Records in 1985. Initially moderately successful, her breakthrough came when one of her fans, a Toei executive, recommended her as the lead for the third season of the crime-drama Sukeban Deka. This role launched her to fame, making her one of the best-selling idols of the late 1980s. By 1989, she began writing some of her own songs, which was rare for idols at the time.
In the early 1990s, a copyright dispute over her stage name led her management to reduce her media appearances. Frustrated, she left her agency and label in 1993, took a hiatus, and shifted to acting. She returned to music in 1997 under a new label and the name YUI, before resuming her original stage name in 1999.
In the mid-2010s, a condition affected her throat, causing her to lip-sync for a time. By the 2020s, she resumed singing live, and in 2021, embarked on her first concert tour in years.
