Asaoka Megumi (麻丘めぐみ) is a Japanese singer, actress, theater director, and former idol.

History

Asaoka's career began as a child actress at age 3 after her mother submitted her to the same talent agency her elder sister had once modeled for as a baby. Her family moved to Tokyo when she was in the fifth grade to follow her older sister's dream of becoming a singer, and lived in poverty to be able to afford living there. Asaoka began modelling when she was in middle school under her real name to help bring some income in for the family. Asaoka began to help her sister out at the recording studio. However, the studio executives seemed more interested in Asaoka than her sister, and asked her to debut as a singer. Asaoka reluctantly agreed to ensure her sister would not be dropped by her label, and debuted as a singer at age 16 with the release of her single Mebae, which became a best-seller. She soon was one of the top selling idols of the early 1970s.

In 1974, Asaoka fell off of a stage during a theater recital and suffered several fractured ribs and an elbow fracture. As a result, she took a six month hiatus to heal.

In 1977, she married Fuji TV director Watanabe Mitsuo and retired from entertainment. Asaoka returned to the entertainment industry upon their divorce in 1983, however she focused primarily on acting.

In 2008 she resumed live concerts due to high demand from her fans.
