Beverly is a Filipino-born singer who moved to Japan in 2016 to start full-scale music activities and signed to the label avex trax.

Biography[]

Beverly Caimen was born as the third child to Ramon Vega Caimen and Leticia Valdez Lumbres, having a brother and two sisters. Since she was little, she has loved singing along to the music on the radio[1], and often sang songs from Whitney Houston and Beyonce[2], but she was so shy that she couldn't sing in front of anyone other than her family members. At that time, her mother encouraged her to attend voice lessons starting at the age of nine[3].

At age 13, she participated in a Filipino singing contest accompanied by her mother[4][5], who was watching in the front seat[6]. The first song she sang in the contest was Christina Aguilera's "The Voice Within"[7].

At age 14, she was suggested by her voice coach to practice with the song "Listen" by American singer Beyonce. Thanks to that, she acquired a high tone voice[8][9] of more than two octaves[10] that could reach the high range from 3F to 5A[11][12], which was called "out of standard"[13][14] or "different dimension"[15][16], and became her trademark. After that, through her activities at the "Entertainment Club" that she belonged to in high school, she decided to become a professional singer in the future.

At the age of 19, she participated in a professional singing contest for the first time, and won the highest award for a vocalist performance against other professionals[17][18]. Whitney Houston's "one moment in time" that she sang at that time is a song that is meaningful to her even up until now[19][20]. After that, she continued to challenge foreign singing contests in the United States and Qatar[21].

Vehnee Saturno, a well-known Philippine composer and music producer and Beverly's voice trainer at the time, who has won numerous awards at music festivals around the world[22], passed a demo tape and introduced Beverly to Yoda Haruo, the president and music producer of UNIVERSOUL, who had worked on MISIA, AI, Kato Miliyah, RIRIKO, Kahara Tomomi, etc., and Max Matsuura, the CEO of Avex and music producer who appreciated her high-tone voice[23]. Shortly after, Beverly started her musical activities in Japan by signing a contract to the label avex trax[24][25].

She had an interest in Japanese culture[26] and going to Japan was one of her life goals [27]. She had been watching Japanese anime since her childhood[28], and liked Doraemon, Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, One Piece, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Fairy Tail[29][30]. Through these shows, she gained an interest in Japanese music, especially Ohguro Maki who sang Slam Dunk's ending theme "Anata Dake Mitsumeteru". She looked up its lyrics on the internet and sang the song many times[31][32].

Her music influences include Sarah Geronimo, the national singer of the Philippines[33], and Utada Hikaru along with MISIA who were mentioned as her respected divas in Japan[34]. She also released a cover studio recording video of MISIA's "Everything" on YouTube[35]. In addition, she often listened to Superfly who she learned of after coming to Japan and Shimizu Shota.[36][37]. In the Philippines, slow ballads were her main genre, but when she began singing upbeat pop songs after moving to Japan, she responded by saying it was a good challenge as well as a learning experience for her [38].

On May 31, 2017, she released her debut album AWESOME. The song "I need your love" was introduced to the producer of the drama starring himself by Oguri Shun, who felt in love with Beverly's outstanding live performance, and soon after selected as the opening theme of Fuji TV drama CRISIS Special Security Squad.

On her 24th birthday, June 20, 2018, she released her second album 24 which includes the song "Be The One" in collaboration with Komuro Tetsuya and Asakura Daisuke of "PANDORA" which became the theme song of Kamen Rider Build.

Beverly's activities are not limited to Japan, she also has been selected as a support act for the performance of Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour in Japan, and was invited to perform at the ASEAN 50th Anniversary Supper held in her home country the Philippines in Manila, which was attended by 1500 government officials including President Duterte of the Philippines, President Trump of the United States, and Prime Minister Abe of Japan.

She has attracted attention not only from Japan but also from all over the world, such as being selected as an artist to participate in "YouTube Music Sessions", a support project for artists who are expected to be active in the future by YouTube.

  • She speaks three languages: English, Tagalog, and Japanese[39].
  • Her favorite foods are shrimp dishes[40][41] and all kind of sweets[42]
  • Her least favorite foods are raw fish such as sushi and sashimi, and sticky foods such as okra, natto, and tororo[43].
  • Her dream is to become a Japanese singing diva[44], appear in famous music programs such as NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen[45], tour at large halls including Nippon Budokan[46], hold dome performances such as at Tokyo Dome and Kyocera Dome[47][48][49], and one day perform a one-man show on big stages in the Philippines and the world. She wants to live as a singer until the end of her life[50][51].
  • Her mottos are "Be Positive.[52]" and never forget to say "Thank you.[53]".
  • Her catch phrase is "Just Listen ..!", which means to put in the determination and love to live with the song for 24 hours [54].
