Underground idols (地下アイドル; Chika aidoru) are independently managed solo idols or groups who perform at small venues. Underground idols are mainly active through live performances than through exposure from mass media or CD releases through major record labels, thus making them more accessible to fans than mainstream idols.
Underground idols are sub-genred into Akiba-kei Idols and Alternative Idols.
They are also known as "Live idols" (ライブアイドル, Raibu aidoru) or "Indies idols" (インディーズアイドル, Indīzu aidoru).
