History[]

2013-2014:[]

On July 19, 2013, avex's sub-label rhythm zone revealed the concept and name of a new girl group. The group's name "FAKY" was created with multiple meanings, it combines the two words "(FA)ntastic" and "To(KY)o", and also stands for "(F)ive (A)ss (K)icking (Y)oungsters". It also derives from the word "FAKE" in order for them to challenge themselves to bring something new to the Japanese music scene and embody the "REAL" world.[3]

The group was formed with the intention of being "a girl group with international appeal". Their concept had been teased with "overseas expansion in mind" and to "be accepted not only in Japan but also abroad" even before their debut, with members who are skilled in languages, singing and dancing.[3] Shortly after, on the 22nd of the same month, the five founding members were revealed to be Anna, Diane, Tina, Lil' Fang and Mikako.

On July 29, 2013, the group's first music video, "Better Without You", was released as a YouTube exclusive single. The song is an EDM number produced by Digz, Inc. Group, a producing team home to popular producers such as HIRO, STY, and many others.[4] Later that year, on September 1, FAKY held their first live performance as an opening act of the music festival a-nation stadium fes. 2013 at Ajinomoto-Stadion in Tokyo. FAKY's second single, "Girl Digger" was released on November 25th, 2013 via YouTube-only as well. The year after, FAKY officially released Better Without You on streaming on January 15, 2014, which included the original track and different remixes of the song.

Their first physical single "P.O.V." was announced to be released afterwards, but it was soon cancelled without any further reason as to why. FAKY then announced that the group would be cancelling all music activities for the remainder of the year and they had plans to comeback as a "revamped" FAKY in 2015.

As a gift to the fans, FAKY announced that they would compile all of their recorded songs at that moment and put it on a new digital mini-album called The One. This digital EP includes their previously released songs, cancelled single "P.O.V.", and more. The title track off the mini-album "The One" was FAKY's first ballad song and the theme song of the movie 'Bilocation'. Their 1st EP The One was released on May 28th, 2014 and this release marked the start of their hiatus.

During their hiatus, both Tina and Diane left FAKY, and avex searched for a new addition to the group.

2015-2016 : FAKY resumes activities with a new member[]

In October 2015, FAKY returned from being on hiatus for more than one year and relaunched with four members: Anna, Lil' Fang and Mikako from the original line-up, and a brand-new member Akina who came to Japan from the United States.[5] They released their first song with this lineup "Afterglow" in December 2015.

In April 2016, they also formed the supergroup FAMM'IN together in collaboration with electro-pop duo FEMM and singer/songwriter Yup'in.[6]

FAKY's next songs, "You" and "Candy" were also pre-released via YouTube and Streaming in early 2016, leading up to their 2nd digital EP entitled Candy which was released on May 24, 2016.[7] By the end of the year, the music video for FAKY's song "Candy" was nominated for Best New Video at the VMAJ 2016.

FAKY later released another music video for their song "Are You OK?" and hinted at more new music coming in the next year.

2017-2018: Signing with Major Labels & Anna's Departure[]

In early 2017, the group pre-released new single "Surrender" and announced their upcoming 3rd EP Unwrapped, which would also be their first physical release and mark their major label debut. The mini-album Unwrapped was released on June 14 in the same year and was promoted with the song "Someday We'll Know".[8][9][10] On August 30th 2017, FAKY released a new summer single "SUGA SWEET" and followed up with another song "Chase Me" for the anime Gundam Build: Battologue in October. Soon after, they made their first venture into the west with the english versions of "Someday We'll Know" & "Candy" in collaboration with the UK-label XVII MUSIC.

They year after in 2018, FAKY were chosen to perform as part of CRAZYBOY's tour CRAZYBOY presents NEOTOKYO ~THE PRIVATE PARTY 2018~ and as an opening act for Hiroomi Tosaka's tour HIROOMI TOSAKA LIVE TOUR 2018 "FULL MOON".[11]

New songs "Who We Are" and "Bad Things (English Version)" along with music videos for both songs were released in the Spring and Summer months of 2018.

On July 2, it was announced that FAKY would be in charge of the new ending theme for the anime Black Clover. The song used for the new ending would be titled "four".[12] Additionally, their new song "Last Petal" was chosen as the opening theme for the TV drama Anata ni wa Naiwa Nai (あなたには渡さない), making it the first drama tie-up for the group.[13] These two songs would later also be released on their first physical single "four", with the copies being sold exclusively at FAKY's live show f(o)ur.

On November 16 in the same year, member Anna announced on Instagram that she would be departing from the group to pursue an acting career. She performed as a member for the last time at FAKY's 2018 live, fo(u)r, on December 20.[14]

After Anna officially departed from the group, FAKY announced that they will be adding two new members, Taki and Hina, and would continue as a 5-member group. While Hina was a former member of Def Will prior to her addition, Taki was a teen actress & model from the Philippines and she moved to Japan in order to debut.

2019-Present: FAKY 3.0[]

In July 2019, the group announced the beginning of FAKY's new lineup with the release of 3 new dance singles with the theme of 'GIRL POWER'. The singles released in the trilogy were "GIRLS GOTTA LIVE", "ANTIDOTE, and "NEW AGE". At the same time, they opened their own group YouTube channel and started to upload various content such as dance practices and vlogs.

The next year on February 26, 2020, FAKY released the digital single "half-moon" which was based on Hina's feelings from her appearance on the popular romance reality show 'Tsuki to Ookami ni Damasarenai' on AbemaTV[15]. To date, the "half-moon" video is their highest viewed MV of all time.

In July of 2020, they also released another version of half-moon featuring Novel Core, a rapper under SKY-HI's label BSMG who was Hina's partner on the aforementioned reality dating show.

On June 17, they released the digital album Re:wrapped which features some past songs re-recorded with their new 5-member line-up.
