Fujii Fumiya is a Japanese singer-songwriter, actor, and former lead vocalist of the boy band THE CHECKERS.
History[]
Fujii was born to two working class parents in 1962. His father worked for the Japanese National Railways which is also where Fujii worked before his debut. He became interested in music in middle school after seeing Yazawa Eiikichi live, and started singing for local school bands, one of which was with his friend Takeuchi Tooru. In 1981, while still in high school, they formed the indie band THE CHECKERS and entered the Yamaha Light Music Kyuushu Regional Tournament and won the competition. However, since all of the band members were still high school students at the time, they turned down all record contracts. After graduation Fujii worked as a station attendent, but dreamed of becoming a professional musician, so he quit his job in 1983, re-formed the band THE CHECKERS, and made his professional debut. THE CHECKERS soon became the most popular boy band of the 1980s with teenagers.
In 1992, THE CHECKERS broke up, and Fujii began his solo career which was very successful throughout the 1990s. He still regularly makes music and tours today.
