Matsumoto Hideto (松本秀人), better known by his stage name hide, was a guitarist, singer-songwriter, producer, and the former guitarist of X JAPAN.

He passed away on May 2, 1998, at the age of 33.

On May 2, 1998, he was found hanged with a towel tied to a doorknob in his Tokyo apartment. It is believed that he committed suicide (although his bandmates and fans do not believe this hypothesis to this day).
He was one of two members of X JAPAN to commit suicide (years later, in 2011, his bandmate Sawada "Taiji" Yasushi also committed suicide after getting into an altercation with a female passenger on Delta Airlines Flight 298 from Narita, Chiba, Japan to Saipan, Mariana Islands).[1]
