Hirao Masaaki (平尾昌晃) was a Japanese composer and former singer.
He began his solo career in 1958, but his health was permanently affected after contracting tuberculosis in 1968. Afterwards he worked as a composer and music trainer. He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2014 and was in critical condition, but survived. Soon after it was discovered that he had lung cancer, and on July 21, 2017, he passed away in a hospital at the age of 79 from pneumonia.[1]

- In 1974, he founded the Hirao Masaaki Ongaku Gakuen (平尾昌晃音楽学校), a chain of musical training academies all over Japan. Many famous singers trained in his academies, such as Hatanaka Yoko, Ishino Mako, Utsumi Kazuko of Onyanko Club, Goto Maki of Morning Musume, and Koda Kumi.
