History[]

She was encouraged by her family, particularly her mother, to become a singer from a young age. In 1981 at only 14 years old she auditioned for the televised talent scouting show Star Tanjou! and made it all the way to the final rounds. However, she failed to negotiate a record contract and was therefore eliminated. She tried again after entering high school in 1983 by auditioning for the group Shojotai and this time was signed to Bond Planning. During this time she began working directly under the wing of Bond Planning's president Takasugi Keiji who decided she would be more suitable for a solo idol versus debuting as part of Shoujotai. In 1984, her agency sent her to the 8th Nagasaki Song Festival talent contest and she was the winner. This proved that she had what it took to be an idol, so her solo debut was guaranteed.

She finally made her official debut as an idol singer in 1985. She immediately debuted with a different concept than most female orthodox idols at the time that was more similar to Western teen idols. This concept at first led to moderate success. However, her agency began creating songs and stage costumes that were increasingly more dramatic and daring which helped her stand out among other idols. This peaked when she released 1986-nen no Marilyn in February 1986 which became a huge hit. In 1988 she became one of the first "band-dols" when she formed the band Minako with Wildcats.

In 1990 she expressed an interest in performing in musical theater. She successfully landed the leading role of Kim in the Japanese edition of the musical Miss Saigon. After her performance recieved critical acclaim and a few acting awards, she primarily became a musical theater actress.

In the early 2000s she began to frequently fall ill, and on January 12, 2005 was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare aggressive blood cancer. Despite undergoing several types of (at the time) cutting-edge treatments and support from several celebrities and friends, she eventually passed away from the disease on November 6, 2005 at 38 years old.
