Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり) is a musical group founded on February 1, 1999, by Mizuno Yoshiki and Yamashita Hotaka, who had attended the same primary, junior high, and high schools. The name "Ikimonogakari" comes from the fact that they were both first-year elementary school students who worked together as "students in charge of feeding animals".
They started their street-live activities in their hometown, Atsugi. On November 3, 1999, Yoshioka Kiyoe, the younger sister of a classmate, Yoshioka-kun, entered their street live performance, and the group grew to three members. With Yoshioka as their powerful vocalist, they began to concentrate on their birthplace of Atsugi, selling out one-man gigs at live houses and venues.
Since their major debut on March 15, 2006, with "SAKURA", they have released many hit songs such as "Arigatou", "YELL", "Blue Bird", and "Kaze ga Fuiteiru".
They made a "grazing declaration" on January 5, 2017 and temporarily suspended their activities; on November 2, 2018, they resumed their activities with a "gathering declaration".
Yamashita Hotaka announced on June 2, 2021, that he would be leaving the group after the summer of the same year, effectively ending the three-member Ikimonogakari and beginning a two-member lineup.
