Iwai Sayuri (岩井小百合) is a former Japanese actress and idol singer.
History[]
Iwai got her start in entertainment as a child stage actress and local model. In 1982 she gained a cult following after appearing on several amateur karaoke television shows and was scouted by Yutaka Productions.
She made her debut as an idol singer in early 1983 to huge success. That same year she performed at the Nippon Budoukan at age 15 and one month old, and is still the youngest soloist in history to hold a concert there. In 1984 she restarted her career as an actress. In summer 1987, she was to perform in the lead role of the musical "The Little Princess Sara." However, in June 1987, Iwai suffered through a major traumatic incident in which her boyfriend suddenly passed away in front of her while on a date at Tokyo Disneyland.[1] Although she finished the musical tour, after the incident Iwai stopped appearing as frequently in the media and preferred taking roles out of the public eye.
She got married in 2003 to a doctor. She announced her retirement from entertainment in June 2004 after the birth of her first child, a daughter. In 2005 the family moved to Houston, Texas, in the United States to continue their education. She gave birth to her second child in the United States in 2007. In 2008 Iwai and her family returned to Japan after completing their educational goals and have remained there ever since.
