KYOTO SAMURAI BOYS is an all-male performance team debuted in September 2019, organized by SAMURAI BOYS PROJECT and directed by Go Ueki (PaniCrew). Before the COVID-19 global pandemic, the team performed exclusively at the KYOTO SAMURAI THEATER on the grounds of the Heian Shrine in Kyoto.
They suspended their activities indefinitely from May 31, 2020 due to affects of the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
In January 2022, the group officially announced the end of the hiatus and a new performing schedule in Tokyo from March 2022 to April 2022.
Their concept is portraying the conflict of young people who live in the space between the digital world and reality as a universal theme that transcends national borders. Thus, their performances are based on a fusion of physicality and technology. Additionally, their performance does not have any spoken dialogue, leaving the story telling to depend purely on the members' expressions and actions. The technology used includes but not limited to laser and projection mapping. Members are to display various abilities during a total of about 40 minutes of performing, from acting, acrobatics, to singing and dancing.
The group is split up into three teams with six members each: Team Tsubaki/Camellia (team椿), Team Kikyo/Chinese Bellflower (team桔梗) and Team Wakaba/New Leaves (team若葉).
When performing on stage, the members are assigned to 2 divisions of 9, each with a mix of members from all 3 teams.
When first debuted and before the grand opening of the theater, Tsubaki had 5 members without Yamaguchi Kouki, who was added before the grand opening and thus debuted about one month after his fellow members.[2]
