King & Prince, often abbreviated as KINPURI, is a two-member male idol group formed in 2015 with six members. They debuted on May 23, 2018 with the single "Cinderella Girl" from Johnnys' Universe.

History[]

  • They performed at "Johnny's Ginza 2015" held at Theater CLIÉ from April 24 to June 1, 2015, and from April 24 to 26 and from May 30 to June 1. This is the first time that these six people have been selected to lead the performance. At that time, the performers column was written with the joint name of these six people, and the group name was not written.[2] Also, while only 4 tickets were sold for the daytime performance on April 26, more than 1,000 people lined up to buy a small number of tickets decided by lottery.[3]
  • They were formed as Mr.King vs. Mr.Prince on June 5, 2015, and at the same time, they were announced as supporters of TV Asahi's event "TV Asahi Roppongi Hills Summer Festival SUMMER STATION".[4] The group name was decided by Johnny Kitagawa, two hours before the press conference.[5] "Mr.King" consists of Hirano Sho, Nagase Ren, and Takahashi Kaito, while "Mr.Prince" consists of Kishi Yuta, Iwahashi Genki, and Jinguji Yuta. The two units in one group have the meaning just as the "battle between the king and the prince" means, each of them scatters sparks and works hard to improve their skills. They selected "Summer Station" as the event's official theme song, and performed it for the first time at the Mazda All-Star Game 2015 pre-game event held at Tokyo Dome on July 17.[6] When they were first formed, they were considered to be a limited-time group, but on August 20, 2015, the continuation of their activities was officially announced, and "Summer Station" was broadcast live on the music program "Music Station" the following day on August 21.[7][8]
  • Since 2016, they have been divided into two units, "Mr.KING" and "Prince". However, after the six members gathered together for the concert "Summer Stage Kimitachiga KING'S TREASURE" held in the summer of 2017, the members, led by Hirano, directly approached the president in September to discuss debuting as a six-member group.[9]
  • They held a press conference at Universal Music's new building on January 17, 2018, and a new exclusive label, Johnny's Universe, was established as the first collaboration between SMILE-UP Office and Universal Music. It was announced that they will make a CD debut as the first artist.[10] Along with this, the group name was changed to "King & Prince" with the meaning of "6 people together". It was also announced that Kishi, the oldest member of the group, had been appointed as leader.[11] In addition, Mr. KING and Prince may continue their unit activities in the future.[12]
  • On November 4, 2022, it was announced that Kishi, Hirano, and Jinguji would be leaving the group as of May 22, 2023, as well as leaving Johnny's Office.[13][14][15][16] After May 23, Nagase and Takahashi will continue the group.[17]
