Kokusho Sayuri (国生さゆり) is a Japanese actress, author, former idol, former founding member of Onyanko Club, and a former founding member of McKee.
History[]
Kokusho had an interest in entertainment from a young age, especially the idol world. In 1984, a friend suggested she enter the Miss Seventeen Contest by submitting a photo and biography. Although she didn't win, Sony Entertainment noticed her athleticism and offered her a temporary contract to represent them at a televised track meet in January 1985. The contract ended soon after, but she stayed in touch with the staff.
Returning to her hometown, she worked part-time as a perfume saleswoman until her former Sony manager encouraged her to audition for the Fuji TV sponsored All Night Fuji High School Girl Special in February 1985. She won first place in the beauty pageant contest featured in the audition and a few months later debuted as an original member of Onyanko Club on April 1, 1985.
Despite her hard work and growing fan base, Sony Music and Fuji TV were reluctant to let her go solo. After months of convincing, she made her long awaited solo debut in February 1986 and quickly became one of the most popular members of Onyanko Club. She graduated from Onyanko Club on March 30, 1987 to focus on her solo singing career which abruptly ended in 1989 following a dispute with her manager. However, she decided to continue her acting career.
In 1996, she returned to music with the group McKee but retired from singing again when it disbanded.
In 2022, she revealed she had anonymously written a science fiction epic web-novel called "Kokushu no Ai" (国守の愛) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its success led her to pursue writing more novels under her real name, exploring genres like comedy and poetry, while continuing her acting career.[1]
