She is also a lyricist and composer under the name Aeri (愛絵理).

She joined Onyanko Club on May 23, 1986 and graduated on September 20, 1987, where the group disbanded.

Profile[]

  • Onyanko Club Member Number: 38

History[]

Kudo was born in 1970 to working-class parents. Her entertainment career began at 13 when she was chosen as a winner of the 1984 Miss Seventeen contest, leading her to join CBS/Sony’s idol trio Seventeen Club. After Seventeen Club disbanded in 1985, she left CBS/Sony and awaited new opportunities.

In 1986, she joined Onyanko Club, where she developed a "delinquent" image. She gained attention in 1986 singing backup for Watanabe Marina and in 1987 joined the sub-unit Ushirogami Hikaretai, eventually becoming its leader. Due to her vocal talent far surpassing most in Onyanko Club at the time, she made her solo debut in August 1987 with Canyon Records to great success. Her third single, Daite Kuretara Ii no ni, became a huge hit with the public, applauding her for her ability to sing songs about mature topics. Her subsequent hits made her one of the top idols of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her success continued into the late 1990s, collaborating with major musicians. In 2000, she married Kimura Takuya of SMAP. Kudo briefly paused her career after their first child was born in 2001, but has remained active ever since.

Trivia[]

  • She is designated as one of the four "Idol Shitenno" (アイドル四天王/Four Heavenly Idol Queens,) or idols of the late '80s era that continued to have great success as idols into the 1990s. The other three are Nakayama Miho, Asaka Yui, and Minamino Yoko.
  • She's married to former SMAP member Kimura Takuya.
    • The couple have two daughters together, professional flutist and model Kimura Cocomi (木村心美) and actress, model and lyricist Kimura Mitsuki (木村光希), also known as Koki.
  • During her time with Seventeen Club, she lived in the Sony Music employee dormitory and was floormates with Kokusho Sayuri, Watanabe Minayo, and Jounouchi Sanae, meaning she was acquainted with them before she tried out for Onyanko Club.
    • Kudo has publically stated she had an intense dislike for an Onyanko Club member referred to as "M" during and after her time in the group. Most fans speculate "M" is Watanabe Minayo, however, Kudo also stated in 2000 that she also did not get along with Watanabe Marina.[1]
  • Her favorite hobby outside of singing is painting. She occasionally auctions her artwork.
