Matsuda Seiko (松田聖子) is a Japanese soloist, songwriter, and actress.
She is best known as the highest selling female idol of the 1980s decade.
History[]
Born Kamachi Noriko, her career began after winning the Miss Seventeen Contest in 1978, leading to minor acting and modeling roles in 1979 as Matsuda Seiko. Initially, her father opposed her debut as a singer, but after two years, he allowed her to sign with Sun Music and CBS/Sony Records.
She debuted as an idol singer in 1980 with Hadashi no Kisetsu, featured in a television commercial. However, viewer confusion, as she was not the actress featured in the advertisement, led to moderate sales. Her second single, Aoi Sangoshou, was better promoted, launching her career and establishing her as the top-selling idol of the 1980s.
After marrying actor Kanda Masaki in 1985, Matsuda took a hiatus, returning in 1987 with a Western-inspired pop image and an attempt to enter the global market. The effort failed due to poor reception both domestically and internationally. In addition, Matsuda became the subject of several highly publicized scandals in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When Matsuda returned to Japan in the 1990s, she reverted back to an idol-like image, adapting an "Eternal Idol" persona. In 1996, her 40th single, Anata ni Aitakute ~Missing You~, became a smash hit, sparking renewed interest in her by the general public. Matsuda remains popular and continues to perform regularly.
