Eguchi Chisato (江口千里) née Moritaka (森高) is a Japanese singer-songwriter, a musician, and a former idol.
History[]
Moritaka was born into a music-oriented family. Her father, Moritaka Shigekazu (森高茂一), was once a member of a rockabilly band Orange Hill, and as a result she was regularly exposed to popular music and began learning how to play several instruments from a young age. She joined a student band in high school primarily as their drummer, but also as a bassist. Originally, she had no plans to join the entertainment world and intended to become a local piano teacher, but decided on a whim to audition for the 1986 Pocari Sweat Image Girl Contest. She won the grand prize, landing her a modeling career. She then moved to Tokyo and made her debut as an actress and idol singer in 1987. Since she was able to play several instruments and had been in bands previously, she was marketed as one of the first "banddols" (band oriented idols) at first, and would even occasionally play instruments on live television, which was rare at the time. She also began to write her own lyrics, starting with her fourth single The Mi-Ha.
In 1988, Moritaka fell ill with severe abdominal pain and was hospitalized, forcing her to go on a short hiatus from entertainment. During her hospitalization she began to focus on songwriting and wrote the lyrics to The Stress. The song was highly appreciated for its lyrical content upon release, and from that point on Moritaka wrote most of her own song lyrics. Around this time she also changed her style and image from rock music to electronica.
She continued as a successful singer-songwriter into the 1990s. In 1993 she announced that she had developed temporomandibular joint disorder and would be going on hiatus from touring for two years. She returned to full time entertainment in 1995, but went on hiatus again in 1999 soon before the birth of her first child. She returned to the entertainment world in 2002, but irregurarly. In the 2010s she began to return to a full time entertainment career and began touring again.
