Nakamori Akina (中森明菜) is a Japanese soloist, former idol and former actress.
She is best known for being one of the highest selling idols/solo singers of the 1980s.
History[]
Nakamori, the second youngest of six siblings, was encouraged by her mother to become a singer from a young age, although she herself did not care for singing.[1] She began auditioning for the TV talent show Star Tanjou! in middle school, failing in 1979 and 1980 but winning first place in 1981 with a record-breaking score. This victory led to her signing with Reprise Records, a Warner Pioneer subsidiary.
She debuted as an orthodox idol in 1982 with the single Slow Motion, but it was considered a commercial failure as it did not break into the top 20 of the Oricon weekly charts. Her planned next single was cancelled and a new, more daring song, Shoujo A, was released in its place. This single exceeded sales expectations, and after that Nakamori became one of the most popular idols of the 1980s. She also began a side acting career around this time, and dropped out of high school to support her entertainment career.
In 1984, Nakamori began to gradually shed her idol image by releasing a wider variety of music in different genres and singing styles. This transition was met with great commercial and critical success. She also starred in her first leading role in a movie in 1985, further strengthening her popularity. Although she had more freedom with her own artistic expression through her music and image, she still maintained an extremely vigorous schedule, which lead to several physical and mental health problems.
Nakamori went on a one year hiatus from entertainment in summer 1989 to focus on improving her mental health, and returned to the industry in 1990. However, due to the unexpected hiatus as well as alleged behavior issues, her contract with Reprise Records was not renewed, and several projects were canceled. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, her releases became increasingly sporadic due to frequent label changes and worsening health issues, though she enjoyed greater artistic freedom in her musical style.
After going on an extended hiatus in 2009 due to health issues, Nakamori briefly returned to entertainment in 2014. After that, she refused public appearances, but still communicated with fans through her fan club. She continued to release music occasionally up until the release of her 2017 album Akina, and ceased any activity after that.
Speculation about a possible permanent retirement ended in August 2022 when she launched an X (former Twitter) account, announced her comeback with new management, and reformed her fan club. In December 2023, she opened a YouTube channel and began posting self-covers of her older music. In April 2024, she revealed plans for five exclusive dinner shows at the COTTON CLUB in July, marking her both her first semi-public appearance in six and a half years, and first live performance in seventeen years.[2].
In December 2024, Nakamori released her first public interview in many years and announced more dinner shows and a scheduled appearance at the music festival Gigo Rock in Oita Prefecture in April 2025, which was her first public appearance and performance since her return not limited to select fan club members.[3] In June 2025, she announced a possible return to the acting world via voice acting, providing her voice for a supporting character in the children's anime series Araiguma Kara Kara dan.[4] In December 2025, it was reported that is allegedly planning for a nationwide public concert tour in late 2026.[5]
She aims for a full return to entertainment as her health improves.

Trivia[]
- She has two older brothers and two older sisters. Her younger sister, gravure model Nakamori Akiho, passed away from cirrhosis of the liver on May 27, 2019. Her mother Nakamori Chieko passed away from cancer in 1995. Her father Nakamori Akio passed away from pneumonia complications on December 14, 2024[6]
- Nakamori stopped speaking to her biological family in the late 1980s, likely due to her younger sister pursuing an adult modeling career using the family name and issues concerning how the money she made was handled by her family. The last time she saw her biological family was in 1995 at her mother's funeral service. She has allegedly never contacted any other family members or attended any funerals or family events since. She legally removed herself from the Nakamori family registry in 1998. In 2025, one of her older brothers confirmed that she had since been legally adopted as an adult by the family behind her management company HZ VILLAGE'.[7] Although she likely has a new legal name, she still uses "Nakamori" as her stage name as of 2025
- When she first debuted she was considered by both the media and her own management to be the second Yamaguchi Momoe, so many of her early songs were written in the style of Yamaguchi's music. However, Nakamori herself hated this perception and wanted to be seen as her own person. Her voice coach, Omoto Yasutaka (1934-2025), took notice of this and began to encourage her to learn her own style of singing rather than copy Yamaguchi.[8] Over time, she did develop her own style and this perception was gradually broken down
- She dated fellow idol Kondo Masahiko from 1984 to 1989. They were also allegedly engaged to be married at some point, but it was broken off in 1989 as a result of Kondo's multiple affairs
- She was supposed to debut under the stage name "Mori Asuna" (森アスナ) but Nakamori refused to debut unless it was under her real name[9][10]
- She took ballet lessons as a child and stopped when she became an idol, however she would incorporate many elements of ballet into her choreography routines
- In the 1980s Nakamori stated she struggled to make friends in the entertainment industry. However, she was friends with some celebrities like Kawada Atsuko[11], Fujii Fumiya, Koizumi Kyoko, and Tahara Toshihiko
- Tahara stated that their friendship had always been similar to a "older brother-little sister" type relationship, often sharing their concerns about one another, and he also referred to Nakamori as something like a platonic soulmate. After losing contact for several years, they began talking again in 2025. Tahara said that Nakamori had been going to bed early, working out and taking vocal lessons regularly as part of her return to entertainment plan[12]
- She shares a birthday with Ishikawa Hidemi
- She is known to be technologically inept. In a 2006 interview on the television show HEY! HEY! HEY!, she admitted she had never owned a cell phone. In 2024 she stated that she owned an Apple smart phone and enjoyed using the digital voice assistant Siri, but was still confused by social media[13]
- She is a longtime fan of the comedian duo Nakagawa-ke (中川家)[14]
- In 2025 she admitted that she has never enjoyed singing and only initially pursued a singing career for financial reasons. However, overtime she grew to value her fans over all else. She considered permanent retirement from entertainment during her hiatus starting in 2017, but decided to come back because she still had many dedicated fans cheering and even concerned for her even while inactive. She even went to far as to say that if she only had a single fan left that wanted her to sing, she would do it for them.[15]
- She is known to often bow in gratitude very deeply, with her head sometimes coming below her knees. Sometimes her fans refer to her as a "human flip-phone."[16]
- Nakamori was known throughout her career to love alcoholic beverages, and stated on many occasions that red wines and mixed drinks with vodka were her favorite. It is speculated by many fans and even the tabloid media that at some points in her career she experienced addiction and/or dependency, due to reported erratic behavior and statements she made during interviews, although it has never been confirmed. However, in December 2025 it was reported that part of her return to entertainment plan included abstaining from alcoholic drinks, and allegedly she became sober at some point within the year.[17]
