Oe Senri (大江千里) is a Japanese singer-songwriter, composer, musician, and jazz pianist.
History[]
Oe was born in Tokyo but his family moved very shortly after his birth to Fujiidera, Osaka. At the age of three Oe began taking piano lessons and became an avid Western pop music fan in elementary school. In 1974, he tried out for the televised Star Tanjou! talent scouting contest but did not pass. He tried again in 1975, this time to the Yamaha Popular Song Contest, and made it to the final rounds of his region. Although he was not the winner, he became determined to eventually enter the entertainment industry.
In 1980, Oe joined his university's Light Music club and began performing around his campus with various student bands. Finally in 1981 he got his break when he was street scouted by CBS/Sony. However, due to the fact that he was still studying at university, his major debut under the label was delayed. He also began taking singing lessons sponsored by his label. In early 1983, Oe was sent north and began performing on local television stations and at live music events in Sapporo. He became incredibly popular in the region, so in May 1983 he finally made his major label debut under Epic Records. However because of his frequent traveling between Tokyo to perform his entertainment duties and Osaka for college, he was rarely in anything but printed media. He graduated from university in Spring 1984 and moved to Tokyo to pursue his entertainment career full time.
In 2007, Oe announced that he would be retiring from his career in pop music and would be attending the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City to study Jazz music. After a five year hiatus, he returned to entertainment in 2012 and began releasing instrumental piano compositions, which he still does regularly to this day.
