Sakurai Atsushi (櫻井敦司) was the vocalist and ex-drummer of BUCK-TICK.
In 2015, he started a solo project under the name THE MORTAL.
He married BUCK-TICK's stylist in 1991, but divorced a year later. He married again in 2004.
On October 24, 2023, it was announced on BUCK-TICK's official website that Sakurai had died of a brainstem hemorrhage at 23:09 JST on October 19, at the age of 57. He had interrupted the first day performance of the fan club only live "BUCK-TICK FISH TANKer's ONLY 2023" held at KT Zepp Yokohama, Kanagawa on October 19 due to poor health and was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away. According to the wishes of the bereaved family, his funeral was held in private with next of kin. According to his office, a memorial service for Sakurai would be held at a later date.[1][2][3]
