Shiina Hekiru (椎名へきる) is a voice actress, singer, and former idol. She is a former member of the idol group CRYSTAL・A.

She is considered one of the first otaku idols and one of the first voice actor idols. She is also the voice provider of Virtual Youtuber "Hekiryu."

History[]

Shiina became interested in voice acting from a young age after reading about the voice acting profession. In 1991 she successfully passed an audition sponsored by the Japanese Narration Acting Institute and received a scholarship. She then entered the idol group CRYSTAL・A with the other people who passed the audition. One year later she passed her first major voice acting audition and left CRYSTAL・A. The audition was sponsored by the record label CBS/Sony who saw the potential in Shiina not only as a voice actress, but also as an idol. In 1994 she made her debut as an idol in addition to her voice acting career. She began to see success as both an idol and a voice actress, and had a number of hit songs and lead roles in animation series. By 1997 she had performed live over 100 times. In 1997, she became the first voice actor in history to hold a concert at the Nippon Budoukan.

Shiina continued to have a very successful career well into the 2000s. In 2009, she announced that she would be moving to the anime music oriented label Lantis. However, in 2012, she started experiencing sudden hearing loss and announced that she would be suspending her 2013 Live Tour. Since the diagnosis, her concert activities have been less often. On November 8, 2014, she announced that she had married an ordinary man and was also moving to Warner Music Japan.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shiina could no longer perform live in person, so she announced she would be debuting as Virtual Youtuber Hekiryu in 2021 and changing labels again, this time to King Records.
