Shishido Rumi (宍戸留美) is a singer, voice actress, multi-talent, and former idol.
She was also a member of the limited time idol unit Nanatsuboshi in late 1990.
She is considered the first "techno idol" for being the first idol singer with a consistent techno pop genre, as well as being considered a pioneer of denpa music, and of idols incorporating anime and game culture into their concept. She is also notable for being one of the first underground idols.
History[]
Shishido was raised by a single mother who encouraged her to try many activities, such as baton twirling and modelling. She entered entertainment after winning the Lotte CM Idol wa Kimi da! contest in 1989 and debuted as an idol the following year. Her management sought a unique image for her, launching her with a space-themed debut single with choreography incorporating baton twirling. Following this, her music turned almost exclusively electronic and experimental, gaining her a small but dedicated fanbase, particularly among anime fans and electronic music enthusiasts.
In 1992, Shishido voluntarily left Sony Music and her agency after breaching her contract. She went freelance, a rare move then, and began a voice acting career while working as a magazine editor. She continued to perform for fans at small venues, becoming one of the first underground idols, and started writing and producing her own music in the mid-1990s.
