Takahashi Mariko (髙橋真梨子) is a singer and lyricist, and former vocalist of Pedro & Capricious.
Biography[]
Takahashi Mariko's father, Morioka Tsukio (森岡月夫), was a railway worker while her mother, Takahashi Chizuko (髙橋千鶴子), worked at a bank. Her mother also worked as a dancer on the side, leading the two to meet at a dance club in Hiroshima. They married in 1949 and Mariko was born. After the war, her father left the railway company with the aim of becoming a professional jazz clarinetist. The family moved to Fukuoka in 1950 as there were opportunities for musicians to perform at military bases there during the Korean war.
Within a few years, her father became unable to work due to anthrax and her mother supported the family working as a hostess. Most of the income was spent on treatment and painkillers.
Her parents separated when she was five years old and Mariko remained with her mother. The divorce was finalized five years later and she legally took her mother's surname. Her mother had an affair during this time which greatly damaged Mariko's relationship with her.
Her father returned to Hiroshima and worked as a clarinetist again, but passed away at age 38 after years of suffering from the after effects of the atomic bombing.
It was her father's influence that led her to study jazz singing. At age 16, she began aiming for a singing career and took lessons under Watanabe Pro. She became a member of Watanabe Pro's young talent unit School Mates in 1966. However, she left the agency after graduating high school due to wanting to take a different career direction. She continued performing at live venues around Hakata.
In 1972, she was scouted by PEDRO&CAPURICIOUS vocalist PEDRO while performing at a night club and was invited to become the band's new female vocalist. She took the stage name Takahashi Mari (高橋まり) and joined the band. Her agreement was originally to be a member for one year, but when Johnny e no Dengon became a big hit she decided to remain with the band.
She left PEDRO&CAPURICIOUS and debuted as a soloist as Takahashi Mariko.
On August 5, 1993, she married fellow former PEDRO&CAPURICIOUS member Henry Hirose. He now leads "Henry Band', an 8-member backing band that plays for Mariko's live performances.
