Takeuchi Mariya (竹内まりや) is a Japanese singer-songwriter and composer. Her legal name after marriage is Yamashita Mariya (山下まりや)
History[]
Takeuchi was born into a wealthy family of innkeepers that run the historic Takenoya Ryoukan[1] near the Izumo Taisha Shrine. Uninterested in the family business, she pursued other paths, and chose to join an international transfer student program in high school. While placed at Rock Falls Township Public High School in Illinois, she joined the school chorus and began working with music as a hobby. After returning from the United States, she decided to study English full time, and enrolled in Keio University’s English Language and Literature department. While in college, she also continued with her music hobby by joining student bands and working as a music reporter.
Her music career began when she recorded studio vocals for the 1978 Victor compilation Loft Sessions (1), which eventually led her to a solo contract with RCA. Debuting on November 25, 1978, she was initially marketed as an idol singer, but never felt comfortable with that role. In 1981, severe vocal strain led to a brief hospitalization. Soon after she announced a hiatus, officially due to health issues, but also due to burnout and unhappiness as an idol singer. In 1982 while still on hiatus from entertainment, she married singer-songwriter Yamashita Tatsuro and shifted to songwriting, penning hits for other artists under her maiden name.
In 1984, she transferred to MOON and released Variety, her first self-produced album, and simultaneously announced her full return to the music industry. Since then, she has remained an active singer-songwriter.
