Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル), also known as Utada for their English-language releases, is a Japanese singer.

In 1990, they formed the unit U3 alongside their mother and father. The unit debuted in Japan with a studio album released in September 1993.

In 1995, they began releasing music independently in Europe and America under the name cubic U. The same year, they were noticed by producer Miyake Akira while in a studio in Tokyo, who invited them to try making a Japanese debut. They released their debut Japanese single, Automatic / time will tell, in 1998 at the age of 15.

In 2002, they married photographer Kiriya Kazuaki. The couple divorced in 2007.

In 2014, they married an anonymous Italian man. Their first child, a son, was born in 2015. The couple divorced in 2018.

On June 26, 2021, they came out as non-binary in an instagram live video. Their prefix is "Mys"[1] and their pronouns are she/they.[2]
