Warabe (わらべ) was a J-Pop idol unit active from 1982 to 1985.

History[]

The group began as a representative idol group of the family comedy TV sitcom Kin-chan no Doko Made Yaru no? The three group members played the main character's daughters, originally portrayed by child actresses, but after the success of Imokin Trio and Yosenabe Trio, it was decided the characters would undergo a time-skip to debut as a new idol group. Since the program was very popular with children, Warabe's music bordered on children's music. Within Warabe, the girls were referred to as their TV character's names, Nozomi, Kanae, and Tamae.

Due to a highly publicized scandal, Takabe Tomoko was suspended from all entertainment activities for a while, and eventually left Warabe in August of 1983. Despite this setback, the first single released without her, Moshimo Ashita Ga..., became a smash hit, eventually becoming the highest selling single of 1984.

The group disbanded in 1985 so members could focus on solo careers.

Trivia[]

  • They are the sister group to Imokin Trio.
  • Warabe is thought to be the beginning of the "casual" idol group later popularized by Onyanko Club and AKB48. The group featured three "average" looking teenage girls, one of which was plus size, which was extremely unusual at the time. The girls performed in plain, casual clothes, and even performed in nightgowns and pajamas on their parent TV show, which soon after became commonplace in the idol world.
  • Kurosawa and Takabe were in the same graduating class at Horikoshi High School.
